How to fix a crack in roof

If your roof has a crack in it, it can lead to numerous problems. The most noticeable is the leak than can form from a crack. As rain seeps into the crack, it can eventually drizzle through your ceiling and into the floor below. The leak can also lead to mold problems in your insulation, the need to replace ceiling drywall or tiles and other types of damage. You need to fix your roof immediately. The good news is that it is fairly simple to repair a crack in the roof.

1

Safely climb up on the roof using scaffolding or a sturdy ladder. Locate the crack in the roof by inspecting the tiles or other surface. You use the visible leak inside to locate the general area, but remember that water can travel horizonally before it is apparent inside. Once located, you can commence repairs and stop leaking quickly.

2

Apply roofing mastic to the crack. This compound is very sticky and typically black in color. Dip it out with a trowel and spread it over the crack a quarter inch thick. It looks like a mess, but it will seal that crack very well. Make sure you spread the mastic over the entire crack and add some extra beyond the edges of the crack to ensure a good seal.

3

Unroll and cut a strip of reinforcement webbing. This product, available in your home improvement store, reinforces the mastic to make it as tough as the original roofing material – potentially even stronger. Put on rubber gloves and work the webbing down into the wet mastic. Just press it into the mastic so that it stays in place and covers the entire damaged area.

4

Smooth the webbing out with your hands so that it doesn’t bunch up. Your hands will get plenty dirty doing this step, but it is important to make sure the webbing is as smooth as possible to form the best seal you can.

5

Add another quarter inch of mastic over the webbing. Use the trowel again just as you did with the first coat. This additional layer of mastic will cover the webbing entirely, making it invisible to the eye. It will form a rugged, waterproof seal that will all but erase the crack in your roofing material.

Things You Will Need

  • Roof mastic
  • Trowel
  • Reinforcement webbing
  • Scissors
  • Rubber gloves

Tip

  • It is best to perform a crack repair in a roof using mastic on a dry day. The product will set up better in lower humidity conditions, and it will be easier to work with. If you need to stop the leaking from the crack during a rainy day, you may opt to use a piece of tarp weighted with bricks to protect the cracked area.
